هیچ بلایی ویرانگرتر از ابتلا به «تدریج» نیست. آنچه در ابتدا تصور می‌کنی «خیلی مهم نیست اگه تکرارش کنم» یا «حالا مگه چی می‌شه اگه دوباره انجامش بدم»، در درازمدت تبدیل به سرسخت‌ترین عادتهای زندگی می‌شود و تمام منش و روش و دهش و خواهش ما را تعیین می‌کند. جایگاه اجتماعی‌مان، فقر و ثروتمان، اوج یا حضیض، نیکی یا مفسده، موفقیت یا شکست و هر چیز دیگرمان، معمولا، نتیجه‌ی عادتهایی است که هر یک داریم و این عادت‌ها زاده‌ی «تدریجاً عمل کردن» به یک خوی و خصلت خاص است. اعتیاد به هر عادتی، به مقصدی از جنس همان عادت منتهی می شود و به همین دلیل است که وقتی به عقب برمی‌گردیم می‌بینیم ما دانش‌آموزان هم‌نیمکت در یک مدرسه، یا هم‌سن‌وسالان زیسته در یک کشور، پس از یک دهه و چند دهه، چرا اینقدر از هم فاصله گرفته‌ایم و یکی‌مان سر به افلاک برده، دیگری برابر با خاک شده است.

با این حال از یاد نبریم که سرجمع شادی‌ها و غم‌های آدمیزاد یکسان است، یعنی کاخ‌نشین و زاغه‌نشین، در کفه‌ی ترازوی قسمت، مساوی هم از زندگی‌شان راضی و ناراضی‌اند.

The Afflictions of Gradualness

There is no calamity more devastating than falling into the trap of “gradualness.” What you initially think is “it’s not a big deal if I repeat it” or “what’s the harm if I do it again,” in the long run, turns into the most stubborn habits of life and determines all our manners, methods, generosity, and desires. Our social status, poverty and wealth, heights or depths, goodness or corruption, success or failure, and everything else are usually the result of the habits each of us has, and these habits are born from “gradually acting” on a particular trait. Addiction to any habit leads to a destination of the same nature, and that is why when we look back, we see why we, the students who sat on the same bench in a school, or peers who lived in the same country, after a decade or several decades, have become so different from each other, with one reaching the heavens and the other equating to the dust.

However, let us not forget that the total sum of human joys and sorrows is equal, meaning that the palace dweller and the slum dweller are equally satisfied and dissatisfied with their lives on the scales of fate.
